DeSilva Island Edgewood House

Edgewood

It begins with the entry. Rarely is nature integrated so skillfully in an introduction to a home. Descending from the motor court, layered terraces lead to a sunken garden courtyard. Walking down the steps, one is gradually enveloped by the shoreline landscape.

Inside the glass foyer, what unfolds is astounding. The Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, the San Francisco skyline, Sausalito -- seemingly the entire Bay -- stretches from once side of the living room to the other. All doors and windows are trimmed in mahogany. From the birch plank floors to the 14 feet-high ceilings, there is a sense of warmth and space.

With its three center islands, the contemporary kitchen is incredibly sleek. Exquisite Bulthaup cabinetry is accented with black granite counters and stainless steel European appliances. The light-filled dining area overlooks the Bay.

From the breakfast area, double doors open to the patio. A limestone terrace is bordered by a water garden with two cascading weirs. Steel stairs and cedar decks wrap around the home's exterior. In the library, there is floor-to-cieling glass on both sides - with water and City views on one, and an atrium garden on the other.

Deep within the home, the master suite is Edgewood's inner sanctum. The spa bath has a step-down soaking tube and a shower room with message jets. The bedroom's sliding glass doors open to a large terrace surrounded by trees and panoramic views. An outdoor spa may be the home's ultimate escape. A patio runs along the home's west side, connecting the spa to the indoor sauna at the opposite end.

An industrial-style staircase ascends to the second level. Here the residence reinforces it's intimate connection with nature. A flexible, glass-enclosed space is suitable for a guest bedroom or study. Outside, the cedar plank roof deck is an expansive one-of-a-kind space. From its steel railings, one has a unique bird's-eye video the Bay.

Sometimes it's worth building the unexpected. a home that, given its surroundings, people will find pleasantly surprising. This begins to describe Edgewood at DeSilva Island. Designed by renowned architect Tom Kobe of Eight Inc., the home is stunning in its simplicity. Five vertical limestone walls divide floor-to-cieling glass, maximizing the views of San Francisco and the Bay. Similar intersections of minimalism and nature occur through the this modern masterpiece -- creating dynamic spaces for reset, entertaining and creative thought.
